Matthias published a research paper called “Cyber Operations in the Wars in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip: Not yet a Revolution in Warfare”. The article analyses the military use of cyber operations in the Russia-Ukraine War and the Gaza War. The analysis of over 360 cyber incidents reveals that both conflicts are characterised by frequent but low-intensity attacks such as DDoS attacks and hack-and-leak campaigns, while high-intensity cyber operations remain rare. The primary impact of military cyber operations lies in intelligence gathering and psychological effects. Military cyber operations are primarily used for reconnaissance and psychological influence and not for achieving fire-effects against miltiary hardware. Cyber-warfare is currently no revolution in military affairs, but this might change due to the increasing digitization of the battlefield.
